The department was initially established as a joint Department of Anthropology and Sociology in the year 1976. The joint department got bifurcated into two separate departments in the year 1991. Besides, the teaching programme in M.A/M.Sc. in Anthropology, the Department of Anthropology has also M.Phil and Ph.D. programmes. Anthropology is a scientific study of man and his work. It studies various aspects of human society and culture from a bio-social perspective. It has three branches, namely, social/cultural anthropology, physical/biological anthropology and prehistory archaeology. The department offers specialization in social/cultural anthropology and physical/biological anthropology. The thrust area of the Department is tribal studies, social exclusion/inclusion and children and childhood. The department is known for its teaching, research and extension work. Students are given a field exposure through an intensive camp-based fieldwork. The faculty members of the Department are holding important academic positions at national and international levels. Any graduate securing a minimum of 45% is eligible to take admission in anthropology through an entrance test followed by personal interview.
